The Icelandic National Costume

The Icelandic National Costume – Upphlutur

Yesterday I got a call from my neighbor, asking me to come over and take some photographs in the lovely weather (today we have snow, by the way).

She and three other ladies have been making upphlutur, which is the most popular type of the Icelandic national costume, this winter. Now their teacher is moving away, so they wanted to be photographed before she left. I was happy to oblige. The sun was shining (although it was a bit cold) and it’s fun to photograph the beautiful national costume.

I think they look fabulous.  A lot of the upphlutur is hand stitched so it’s a lot of work to make one. I think they did a wonderful job and I know they will enjoy their costumes all their lives, and their children after them.

Fab! Those traditions need to be kept alive.

In Poland you have as many distinctive costumes as there are regions (or even small regions of larger regions :)) ).
