As so many of us, I am trying to be a little greener, use less, avoid toxic ingredients, etc.
Deodorants are full of all kinds of things that, while not proven harmful, are – at least for me – not tempting to put on my skin anymore. So I have been experimenting with a home made deodorant, made with very simple ingredients.
I certainly did not invent this, there are versions of this recipe all over the internet. There is one here, another here and here.
They are all more or less the same, a variation on a theme of coconut oil with some kind of starch and baking soda.
DIY Deodorant Recipe
This is what I used. It is this recipe with a small variation:
6 tablespoons coconut oil
1/4 cup (0.6 dl) cornstarch
1/4 cup (0.6 dl) baking soda
10 drops of tea tree oil
Mix the powders together in a bowl or a jar and add the coconut oil and tea tree drops.
How it works
It does go on a little grainy, which takes some getting used to, but it works. I have been using this for three weeks now, and I am quite happy with it. It’s not sticky, I have had not smell issues what so ever and no staining of clothes. My daughter uses this too for the most part, and she likes it as well.
No Baking Soda?
Next time I would like to make one with no baking soda.
sounds interesting, but I am not sure I can get all the ingredients in Iceland. Especially the white clay, and the shea butter.
